At the end of last week, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office released a patent application from tech giant Apple, in which the company proposed a new, high voltage wall charger. All current Apple chargers on the market are limited to five volts, while this new generation would quadruple that number to 20 - giving customers faster charging times for their Apple devices.

The new wall chargers would be compatible with all Apple products, from the Macbook Pro to the iPhone 5. While the company has not publicly released any information about the new technology, some sources are speculating that the advanced wall charger might be ready in time for the release of the iPhone 6 later this year.

According to the website PatentlyApple.com, the amount of time that it takes for a portable device to be charged can range from one to 12 hours, depending on the amount of charge an internal battery is designed to hold. Apple hopes to cut down on this charging time by introducing a product that could provide a much stronger charge fairly quickly.

Apple is still testing this technology to make sure that it is safe for the general population. All of Apple's officially licensed and sold chargers come with a large amount of internal insulation, to ensure that constant use of the accessory does not cause it to overheat and potentially even set fire. Apple will want to make sure that the product is completely safe before rolling it out for sale.
