Last week Apple updated its full-size iPad, renaming it the iPad Air, and announced an upgraded iPad mini tablet to go along with it. The iPad Air comes with a 9.7 inch Retina display, while the iPad mini features a smaller 7.9 inch screen. Outside of screen size, there's not an enormous difference between the two devices in terms of performance. Both contain a new A7 microprocessor, both come with 16, 32 and 64 gigabyte (GB) storage options and both have very good battery life, although the iPad Air may be able to last a little bit longer.

So which tablet is best for you? CNet.com tries to come up with a few situations in which one iPad would be more suitable than the other, based on the activities the user will be performing.

If you're planning to use you iPad for productivity tasks such as creating documents, spreadsheets and presentations, having a larger screen will be important. In addition, if you're using a portable keyboard to attach to your tablet, the iPad Air's size gives it a major advantage. The keyboards that have been released for the iPad mini are notoriously compact and don't lend themselves well to long-term use.

However, if you plan to spend most of your time consuming content such as movies, music, ebooks or games, the new Retina display on the iPad mini makes it a great device for these purposes. The screen is certainly big enough for such tasks, and because it has the same resolution as the larger iPad (2,048 x 1,536 pixels), it has a higher pixel density than the Air, leading to slightly sharper images.
