When the 12 inch MacBook Retina was first unveiled last year, a windfall of USB Type-C adapters came pouring down from well known manufacturers, startups, and kickstarters. Ever since, an array of accessories have been designed to fulfill what the media have been quick to trumpet as a “desperate need” of owners of the new MacBook.
A year has passed, and let’s be realistic:, while one lonely USB Type-C port may not seem like much, the 12 inch MacBook is a quality ultraportable, with respectable specs, and, most importantly, far from being required to measure up against a MacBook Pro.
Unless you need an array of ports to connect external displays, external storage drives and peripherals, and if you don’t plan on playing World of Warcraft at full specs, or do much video editing, chances are the 12 inch MacBook Retina is perfect for you. Most recently, hardware manufacturer Huawei has decided to add a little something to the low-profile ultraportable. The Huawei MateDock, isn’t a brand new concept, but the design and the presentation are certainly noteworthy.
The MateDock is one of the least expensive adapters designed to fit the finish and profile of the MacBook Retina. For $89, you’ll be able to expand the capabilities of the still young USB Type-C port, to support two USB 3.0 ports, VGA, a LAN port, an HDMI and pass-through USB-C, to allow the laptop to charge while the adapter is plugged in.
The adapter comes enveloped into a leather folio case in two colors, black and brown, which helps take the attention from Huawei’s often criticized tendency to design products a little too similar to Apple’s.
As mentioned, the adapter’s design is bafflingly simple, although one minor issue is the fact that ports are located at both ends of it, which may make cable organization a little messy.
Still, the MateDock is a product that would certainly fit the needs of 12 inch MacBook Retina owners more than most, considering its minute size and weight, not to mention the fact that the adapter can also double as a portable 12V charger for small devices.
