Eerily reminiscent of “The Machine”, the all-seeing, artificially intelligent fictional supercomputer from the TV show “Person of Interest”, Summit’s architecture and sheer size flyes past any stretch of the imagination, as the hardware itself is comprised of 4,608 servers that extend through the size of two tennis courts, housing more than 9,000 22-core IBM Power9 CPUs, and 27,000 NVIDIA Tesla V100 GPUs.

Macs are known for their longevity, but that very same fact may turn to be a curse, at least once per generation, especially at a tipping point for technology, when things begin to change very fast.

AMD’s 2nd generation Ryzen Threadripper has been announced in the wake of Intel’s own fanfare, with a thunder-clap. The 32-core Threadripper 2 pushes the limits with a 12 nanometers dye, 64 threads, and 64MB of L3 cache, built on the Zen+ architecture, clapping back at Intel, as the ultimate supercomputing behemoth, at least until this coming Winter.

Forget Mac vs. PC, or Android versus iPhone. The real showdown has already started, between Intel Core CPUs, and upcoming ARM-based Cortex A-series processors, for supremacy of the laptop market.
