Night Shift hits MacBook users with latest macOS Sierra update

Night Shift hits MacBook users with latest macOS Sierra update

As of macOS Sierra build 10.3 Beta, Mac users can finally enjoy the same biorhythm-friendly feature introduced in iOS 10, to iPhone and iPad users.

Night Shift is an automatic setting that changes the screen color temperature of a device, according to the time of day, helping users get a better night of sleep, by reducing the amount of blue light emitted during the evening hours. Blue light hinders production of Melatonin, a chemical needed to fall asleep, and keep you asleep through the night.

Just like in iOS, macOS users who enable the feature on their MacBooks and desktop Macs, will notice the temperature of their displays warm up to more yellowish/orange tones, almost as if to simulate the colors of a sunset. This effect has proven to allow regular production of melatonin, and restore the ability to sleep.

Apple timing in releasing this feature seems unsurprisingly spot on, as Microsoft has recently introduced a similar feature for Windows 10, in its latest fast ring preview build.

MAc users who upgrade to the new build, can access Night Shift into the Display section of System Preferences, or in the Today section of the Notification Center.

Night Shift can be set manually, or scheduled to switch on automatically, and the color temperature can also be manually set, to specify different levels of display warmth.

Prior to Night Shift, MAc users have been able to achieve the similar goal of eliminating much of the blue light emitted by their displays, through an app called “f.lux”, which still offers a few more options, compared to Night Shift. With that said, this beta version of macOS Sierra is likely to precede more advanced and feature-rich permutations of Night Shift by the time an official build is released.

Apple macOS Sierra 10.3 beta also includes enhancements to the Find My iPhone app, which will now be able to lock onto the location of Apple AirPods as well.
