After taking over as CEO of Apple in late 2011, Tim Cook has made it one of his goals for the company to improve the Apple TV. Alongside the company's other more prominent products - such as the Macbook Pro and iPad mini - the Apple TV became something of an afterthought to the tech company. This trend has changed in recent months, though, as updates to the system and strong marketing campaign have made the television a product worth owning.

Here are a few of the new apps that were recently added to the Apple TV:

  • ABC News: This app is accessible to all users completely free of charge. In addition to receiving hourly news updates, users will also have access to nine different local stations from across the country. Along with the up-to-the-minute information, consumers will also have access to ABC news archives and original productions.
  • Flickr: Avid photographers will be especially happy with this update, as it offers a redesigned Flickr channel for just $15 a month. It will include an improved search function, custom content and redesigned icons. Flickr is a great destination for those who like to take and store their photographs.
  • PBS Kids: If you have any small children at home, Apple TV is a great way for you to keep them entertained for hours on end. This feature allows you access to the network's deep bench of programming made specifically for children. Although this subscription requires online activation, you do not need to have a cable subscription to use it.
