iPhone 6 knock-offs are coming

“Pssst... Looking for an iPhone 6? We got em’ cheap!” is an all-too familiar call to action, from our friendly back-of-the-truck phone retailer.

However, times have changed since the glory days of high-price boxes filled with rocks. “Con-sumers” (pun intended), have spoken, demanding, if not the real thing, something that is actually functional.

Premiere Chinese knock-off retailer Goophone went through pretty big lengths to provide its customers a very close representation of the iPhone 6, which Goophone dubbed “i6”, while replacing the Apple logo with a picture of a bumblebee. Why a bumblebee? According to Goophone, bumblebees are cute. Next question.

Of course, considering that Apple has not released any official information about the look of the iPhone 6, with the exception of occasional leaks, the Goophone i6 is at best the embodiment of wishful thinking, from a company out to cash-in on the thirst for hype.

Since the Goophone appears to be an actual phone, and not merely a “gooph”, let’s have a look at the main differences between what we know about the iPhone 6, and the i6:

The iPhone 6 is likely to ship with a 2.0Ghz processor, while the Goophone is powered by a 1.4GHz MT6582 octa-core cortex-A7 processor, and the android operating system replacing iOS in the i6 is to be expected.

Consistent to the most realistic design expectations, the fingerprint scanner on the front, and the auto-focusing camera on the back have been implemented in the i6. the i6 is offered in two colors: black and white. This is probably due to the fact that the i6 borrows heavily from the iPhone 5s previous knock-off design from Goophone, which shipped before Apple’s all-new gold trim was introduced.

In spite of Goophone’s multiple copyright violations, the Chinese government has shown a passive attitude towards Goophone’s activities, most likely due to a mixture of the overall sentiment of the Chinese government towards American enterprise, and the lower price of phones manufactured by local companies like Xiaomi.
