Tim Cook talks about commitment to the Apple Mac desktop: possible Mac Pro announcement in 2017?

Apple Mac Pro

It’s been almost four years since the Apple Mac Pro was last updated, back in 2013. Apple’s most powerful desktop Mac was introduced as a game changer in the professional workstation category.

Since then, Apple has been seemingly more interested in designing laptops, than desktops, and justifiably so, in consideration of a decline in desktop sales. With that said, when the iMac Retina 4K and 5K were announced, the news came like a breath of fresh air, and the strong sale numbers that followed signaled a renowned interest in desktops, at least in regard to Macs.

While optimism has been in the air, that data alone didn’t say much about a possible refresh of the Mac Pro, until recently, when Tim Cook answered growing concerns in regard to Apple not being committed to desktop Macs as much as its mobile and laptop categories.

In a message posted in a forum for Apple employees, Tim Cook addressed concerns by stating that “... we have great desktops in our roadmap. Nobody should worry about that...”.

While Cook’s words can mean a number of things, the news is encouraging, because it signifies the potential for Apple to be thinking beyond the iMac and the Mac Mini, towards something completely different. That “something” might not be necessarily a next Mac Pro, but it’s important to consider that the workstation market is a resilient one, and Microsoft Surface Studio is proof of that. PRior to its unveiling, everyone thought it would be a failure, and many discounted it as an iMac ripoff, until everybody saw the brilliance of creating a product as specialized and targeted, as it is versatile and multi-faceted.

By citing “great desktops”, something innovative and different is to be expected, especially in light of the latest patents that have emerged, and shed light onto what could possibly be a very interesting scenario for future Mac desktops. Apple Pencil integration is definitely in the cards, along with many features inherited from iOS devices, such as Touch-ID, and Apple Pay, however, also according to Tim Cook “...you can pack a lot more performance in a desktop — the largest screens, the most memory and storage, a greater variety of I/O, and fastest performance...”, which suggests specs that are certainly on par with expectations of what could be the closest thing to a Mac Pro,we could get in 2017.
