Rumored 2016 MacBook Pro’s most outlandish feature has been (almost) confirmed

Apple MacBook Pro 2016 might feature OLED touchbar

For over a month we have heard of the next MacBook Pro’s considerable redesign. The upcoming flagship Apple laptop hasn’t seen a radical update for quite some time, in respect to the new MacBook Retina, but it seems that the Pro is about to get the “Pro” treatment in due time, with a hefty range of features, some of whom are hard to believe, or even visualize, without the help of tasteful, and surprisingly spot-on concept renderings.

According to internal code retrieved by French tech website Consomac, from within macOS Sierra, which indeed features code references to a “Tabs_Customizre_Function_Row”, which may, or may not be a reference to the rumored “Dynamic Function Row”, a touch-enabled function key designed to offer contextual information for running desktop programs and background apps, such as social media feeds, email notifications, and even media playback controls.

The feature is rumored to be an actual OLED display that will respond to user input in various ways, depending on the software being used.

Support for USB Type-C support is also a possibility, as references to the port have been found within Mac OS X Sierra. Not much is known about the actual design of the next MacBook, but sources quoted by Bloomberg and other news outlets, seem to converge to a design inspired by the 12 inch MacBook Retina.

By that token, the 12 inch MacBook Retina and the next MacBook Pro might end up having quite a bit in common, in reference to design and color options, as well as the possibility that the new MacBook Pro might even lose the MagSafe power cord, and use a USB Type-C port to recharge its battery instead.

More Mac News to come

While the MacBook Pro will be most likely the star of the show at the next keynote, September 7th (with any luck that we’ll get a new MacBook that early), we might even be able to get a glimpse of other Mac products that could make it to production between now and 2017, such as a 5K standalone Retina display for the Mac Mini and Mac Pro, to replace the retired Thunderbolt display.
