2016 Microsoft Surface Book will look a lot more like a laptop

Surface Book Hinge

When Microsoft’s Surface Book was first introduced last year, the company’s first flagship laptop featured a number of innovations worth paying attention to, including the Muscle Wire mechanism, designed to detach the screen of the Surface Book from its base, and the “dynamic fulcrum hinge”, that enables the Surface Book to flip the base completely under the keyboard, and convert the laptop into a powerful tablet.

One thing that is immediately apparent was that the name “Surface Book” was not exactly a jab to the Apple MacBook, but a most appropriate name for a device that actually does look like a book, or a folio, when closed. Microsoft VP Panos Panay demonstrated how the Surface Book could detach its screen, effortlessly, with the flare of a magic act.

A year later, the Surface Book is due for a refresh, and the rumor mill has been hard at work, trying to come up with plausible predictions on what the next Surface Book will look like.

A few sources, cited by Windows Central, seem to point to a possible redesign of the dynamic fulcrum hinge, to no longer feature a gap, when the Surface Book is folded. In its next redesign, sources have commented on the possibility that the Surface Book’s base and display components will line up flush, making the device look a bit more like a conventional laptop.

While there is yet to be a confirmation of any of the above, the Surface Book is still a very new device under many aspects, and design chances are to be expected in future iterations. With Windows 10’s free upgrade past its expiration, Microsoft may also be looking into a number of new features to be introduced with future Surface products, to incentivize shoppers, starting this Fall, as rumors of a Surface desktop AIO have begun mounting, with word of three versions of what some believe to be a modular Windows 10 PC for the living room.

Sources suggest that the new device will be introduced in three sizes, 21 inch full HD, 25 inch 4K, and 27 inch 4K, to directly compete with the Apple iMac Retina.
