Apple Watch 2 will be released in April this year

In the wake of public announcements from Quanta’s CEO, Barry Lam, that an Apple Watch 2 is about to enter trial production as soon as this month, speculations on the look and specs of the upcoming device, have been mounting.

Some rumors have hinted at a new design with a round face. While such could have been an interesting turn of events, Lam recently rebuked speculations of a radical rehauling of the Apple Watch, and confirmed that the new iteration of the smartwatch will preserve its original design, with only a few, tiny additions.

The Apple Watch 2 will reportedly integrate a more capable battery, in answer to consumers clamoring for longer daily battery life.

The larger battery will also provide additional power to a tiny FaceTime camera, as odd as it may seem, since most smartwatch manufacturers seem to be opting out of integrating camera sensors into their devices due to the fact that live video streamed onto the watch’s display has a rather heavy impact on battery usage.

Another fun fact about the Apple Watch 2 involves reduced dependence on an iPhone to function. In fact, there is a strong possibility that the Apple Watch 2 will be able to make and receive calls, as well as send and receive text messages, without the need to pair it with an iPhone. This feature is not new to Samsung users, as well as other manufacturers, but considering that the Apple Watch 2 will get to consumers almost a full year from the release of its predecessor, the device has a strong chance to make good on its promise of higher performance in respect to every aspect of the original Apple Watch.

By the time it’s released, which could be around April, the new device is expected to match the same color selection of its predecessor, and possibly offer the same compatibility with existing wristbands and accessories, as the device is still too new for Apple to diverge from the current design.

The price tag is still unknown, but there is a very plausible chance that, just like the first Apple Watch, the Apple Watch 2 will be released in multiple versions, from the low end of the budget spectrum, to the highest.
