A new Apple Pencil 2 is in the works alongside new iPad Pro
Chinese website Wei Feng reported last week that an updated Apple Pencil is slated for an announcement early this year, alongside what some have speculated as an upcoming 10.5 inch iPad Pro, which could reach consumers as early as March.
The last size update of the company’s brand new product line occurred a year ago, when Apple introduced the 9.7 inch iPad Pro, without any further updates in regard to the Apple Pencil.
While the Apple Pencil was received favourably by consumers, the accessory still has some drawbacks, such as it not being backwards compatible in regard to older iPad models, as well as the lack of a proper docking mechanism.
A universal compatibility across all model iPads, at the very least, would be a great incentive for existing owners of older iPad models, although it’s unlikely to happen, as Apple is known for moving forward with upcoming innovations, rather than reintroducing older technology.
On the other hand, one thing that could happen, is a way for Apple Pencil to stay attached to the iPad Pro when not in use, which is a feature almost universal among compating brands, including Samsung and Microsoft.
This seems to be also the view of Wei Feng, which suggests that the new and improved Apple Pencil 2 will feature an embedded magnet, designed to hold the Apple Pencil onto the iPad Pro.
The very realistic chance for this upgrade to happen stems from two factors: number one, Apple has already filed a patent describing a magnetized stylus. Number two, Apple has always had a penchant for embedding magnets into devices, from the mechanism that allows to effortlessly open a MacBook, to the invention of the MagSafe power connector.
While there are far fewer rumors available about the Apple Pencil, than there are about the iPad Pro, it’s very possible that other features may also be introduced to enhance the stylus.
