We all use passwords every day, whether for our online bank accounts or to login to our emails. One of the most important passwords that you have is your laptop's, which guards all kinds of personal and private information stored on your computer. In the event that you ever lose your laptop or it is stolen from you, it shouldn't  be easy for somebody to login and start going through everything you have. Is your computer's password secure enough?

Here are a few basic criteria it should meet:

  • Have unique passwords for each account. If your computer is used by multiple people, each one will likely have their own account. You don't want to have the same password for each person, as this would make it easy for someone to gain access to every piece of information on each account. Instead, everybody should use a personalized password.
  • It should be at least 10 characters long. The longer a password is, the less likely it is for another person to guess. Make sure that it is something that you will be able to remember, though, so it shouldn't be overly complicated.
  • It should use different character types. You want to make sure that you use as many different kinds of special characters as you can. Try mixing in upper and lower case letters, numbers and symbols such as & and # to make it harder for others to crack.
