At Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference in June, the company briefly mentioned iBeacon, a new capability that may soon become a standard feature of many apps and services for the company's devices. This will give the iPad mini, iPad 4 and other Apple mobile products more enhanced location based abilities that would be useful when trying to connect two devices that are within the same room but aren't connected by 3G or a WiFi network.

Although it's unclear if this qualifies as an iBeacon service, TechCrunch is reporting that the Apple TV now has Bluetooth functionality that allows you to connect your iPhone to it simply by touching the two devices together. This makes syncing the devices much easier. Previously users had to input their Apple ID account directly into the Apple TV, which was cumbersome and awkward with the device's tiny remote.

The iPhone and Apple TV are able to do this using Bluetooth LE ("low energy") technology, a feature that Apple has been including in its mobile devices since the iPhone 4S but had yet to actually integrate into its SDK. Bluetooth LE would allow third party developers to add micro-location functionality to their apps. For example, this would allow you to connect your phone or tablet to a nearby printer without needing a network.

Over the years, Apple has done a terrific job of creating inter-connectivity between all of its product lines, which means that if you only have one Apple device, you're really missing out on some of the more extraordinary features by not having the others.
