While technology is constantly changing and improving, most people tend to own their electronics - whether it is an iPhone, Macbook Pro, or iPad mini - for at least a few years. People grow comfortable with their machines and do not want to switch their entire lives over to a new device. Plus, most high-end products are often pretty expensive when they first hit store shelves. For those iPhone users that have owned their smartphone for a while and may be concerned about its functionality, Apple is working on a solution for that problem.

Earlier this week, the company was awarded a patent from the U.S. Patent Office that will allow the tech giant to "modify operating parameters of a device based on ageing information." Apple notes in the patent that there are several factors - including operating time, voltage and temperature - that could cause a change in the characteristics of the smartphone. Using the information they collect about older iPhones, Apple will be able to create updates that preserve the user experience, making older technology still useful even years later.

Apple has many different parameters for determining the age of an iPhone that were outlined in the patent. Some of the measures include:

  • Battery information, such as how many charging cycles the phone has been put through and the amount of power it can still supply
  • Temperature information, including the average temperature of operation
  • How roughly the owner treats the phone, such as how often it has been dropped or shaken.

Using these and other guidelines, Apple will be able to determine the age of a phone and use that information to determine what updates will be most beneficial for older technology. If you are in the market for an Apple product, shop with PortableOne today!
