Over the last few days, reports in the media have been warning people about strengthening their internet security, particularly after the massive hack by a Russian crime ring that recently stole as many as 1.2 billion username and password combinations across the globe. Because of the growing threat people face online these days, it is more important than ever to practice safety when either on social media or online shopping. You don't want to have your identity stolen or leave yourself open to any possible security risks.

Here are a few tips for having stronger password protections on your computer:

  • Avoid easy words: Your password should be easy for you to remember, but not something that others would easily be able to pick up on. That is why you should pick words that are a little bit more complicated and obscure, as well as avoiding any major references to your own life, such as birthdays or pet's names.
  • Make it long: While most types of accounts have a minimum of how many characters a password must be, you should go above and beyond that count. The longer your password is, the less likely somebody will be able to guess it correctly. Anywhere from 14 to 25 characters works well.
  • Use different combinations: When you are creating your password, mix up the combinations of symbols as much as you possibly can. Having an exclamation mark along with a mixture of upper and lower case letters and numbers will create a much stronger password.
