Your Apple Mac could soon get a dark mode

If you are a Microsoft Windows 10 user, you are probably used to an extremely colorful desktop, with hues changing according to the main tones automatically “eye-dropped” from the background image currently being displayed. This is a very neat feature for some users, while others opt for a more “quiet” experience, by tweaking settings in the Personalization/Colors page of the Settings app.

Mac users, on the other hand, were never given that option, as Mac OS has always been designed with a different approach, more focused on visual consistency, and efficiency, rather than customization.

The standard, and only option on a Mac, has always been its signature pearl-white, gradually progressing to incorporate more frosted-glass, see-through panel effects, but nevertheless, monotone.

With that said, according to a new report by 9to5Mac, things are about to change. Code retrieved from WebKit by twitter user @_inside, AKA Guilherme Rambo shows that Apple may indeed be working on a dark mode option, which could reach users as of version 10.14.

“This is what happens when you build WebKit without the OS version checks and implement effectiveAppearance on NSApplication to return the dark appearance (notice the button and pop up). Dark Mode ®”, tweeted Rambo, on Saturday.

While this may be a long shot from a multicoloured Mac OS, a dark mode is an option that Mac users have been pining over, as well as iOS users, who have been hoping for a dark mode on iPhone and iPad, at the very least.

Unlike other features introduced rather quietly by the company, adding a dark mode to Mac OS holds a special significance, almost in the same way as when Tim Cook announced the Apple Pencil, in the face of Steve Jobs original stance, largely motivated by contemporary trends predating most modern devices like today’s tablet PC.

If Apple is actually considering the introduction of a dark mode, or any other type of global color change option, the most likely theory is that the change will affect both Macs and iOS devices, at the same time, with a strong possibility for such update to be announced this year at the 2018 World Wide Developers Conference in San Jose, CA, this Summer.
