This isn’t your dad’s Microsoft Paint anymore, and it looks awesome on a Surface

Microsoft Paint with 3D features for Surface tablets

For those of us who started and stuck it out with Windows since the early days, Microsoft Paint was most likely the first graphic program many of us used, for either mindless doodling, or to quickly put together a little graphic for the web.

The original Microsoft Paint shipped with Windows 1.0 in 1985, initially supported only 1-bit monochrome graphics, and used a proprietary MSP file format licensed under ZSoft Corporation’s PC Paintbrush. Paintbrush was in fact what windows users used to call Microsoft Paint up until Windows 95, when Microsoft changed the name to Paint.

Today, Microsoft Paint is a much more sophisticated application than it ever was, while still retaining the same simplicity and intuitive learning curve as the original. With that said, things are about to get exciting.

Two leaked videos, have been found and posted on YouTube, showing a completely different take on Microsoft Paint, which includes features that are hard to find even on high end applications like Photoshop.

Needless to say, Paint has been completely redesigned to work with stylus-enabled touchscreens like Microsoft Surface, and the interface is minimalist and clean, but also colorful and inviting.

Paint’s centerpiece application is 3D painting, which is a new one for an application as simple as Paint. 3D paint is a common feature on high-end 3D programs like Maya, Z-Brush or 3D Studio Max, but it’s rarely seen in a painting program. The process of integrating 3D models and paint over them seems easy enough for most users, and reminiscent of painting over pottery.

If you are looking for a program similar to Google SketchUp, however, this is not it, as it lacks that level of detail and sophistication. With that said, it’s easy to imagine what can be done even with a few simple tools, considering that Paint has been the go-to application for many pixel-artists, who will now be able to rediscover Paint’s whole new creative dimension.
