National Security Agency greenlights Microsoft Surface tablets for top secret government use

Microsoft Surface tablets have been given the approval from the NSA, to be used by government employees, for top-secret tasks, such as data-mining, and intelligence gathering, as well as other high-level investigative applications.

The way the NSA allows employees to use certain categories of personal devices on the field, and in government facilities were level-clearance is required, is through the Commercial Solutions for Classified Program. Said program allows private agencies and enterprises to sell technology to the US government for use by its branches.

The “CSfC” ensures that government agencies have access to the best and latest technology available, in consideration of internal and public complaints in regard to the outdated state of computer systems in numerous government sectors.

As of now, Microsoft Windows 10 devices are in a very advanced stage of integration within several branches of the US military, including the Marines, and the Navy, as of last year, due to the advanced security provided by Microsoft’s latest version of its flagship desktop operating system.

As described by the CSfC program’s official publications, third party products are screened under the definition of “Capability Package”, which entails an approval process in which devices are vetted against their capability to handle classified information, by the NSA’s Classified Information Assurance Director, whose position is currently vested by Mr. Scott Stephenson.

The requirements for compliance to the program are several, along with an agreement to “fix vulnerabilities in a timely fashion”.

According to Microsoft director of program management Rob Lefferts: “...The CSfC program listing demonstrates Windows 10, as well as Surface devices (the only Windows 10 devices currently on the list), when used in a layered solution, can meet the highest security requirements for use in classified environments...”.

At present, Microsoft Surface tablets aren’t the only Microsoft devices and products approved by the NSA. Windows Server 2016, BitLocker and older versions of Microsoft Windows are also included in the list.
