Microsoft Windows 10 powers smart refrigerator in a bid against Samsung

LG new Windows 10 smart refrigerator could be controlled via a Windows 10 laptop

Back in January, Samsung took the lead on smart refrigerators with the Samsung Family Hub, a two-door smart fridge featuring an embedded touchscreen, which can be used to automate several common kitchen tasks, from ordering and checking on groceries, to play music while cooking, and even leave notes and set reminders for oneself or other household members.

Most recently, South Korean consumer products manufacturer LG, showcased a similar concept, powered by Windows 10. The new refrigerator features a 27 inch Windows 10 touch screen, powered by an Intel Atom processor. According to TechCrunch first hand experience with the appliance, the interface seems “surprisingly” responsive, compared to typical IoT touchscreens.

The most innovative aspect of this refrigerator, is that the touchscreen surface turns transparent, and allows to interact with groceries within, for example by tagging grocery items with expiration dates, or purchase dates, to make sure that the contents of the fridge are always fresh.

Needless to say, the Windows 10-powered touchscreen surface is capable of all typical tasks that a Windows 10 device can do, like looking up recipes online, watching YouTube videos, play music, Receiving and initiating Skype Calls, and read the news, among other things.

It’s unclear whether the smart fridge supports technologies like Miracast or Continuum, but if that were the case, it would be interesting to find out how far one can control this appliance from a Windows 10 Phone, a Surface tablet, or even any regular Windows laptop, via Bluetooth, or local WiFi.
