Microsoft Signature Type Cover: Is it worth the money?

Early this week, a new Microsoft Surface Pro 4 compatible “Signature” Type Cover has made its way, quietly, to consumers, as a “premium” option to the standard Type Cover.

Microsoft Surface Pro 4 Alcantara Type Cover

The fabric used to manufacture the Signature Type Cover is a two-tone melange Alcantara, which seems to be a proprietary fabric imported from Italy, and touted to provide “...aesthetic, sensory, and technical qualities like nothing you’ve ever experienced...”, as portrayed by Microsoft, which further elaborates that “...“Alcantara material ages beautifully, growing richer and darker over time and is wonderfully soft to touch...”.

With that said, Microsoft’s new Type Cover is still $30 cheaper than the high-end version introduced with the Surface Pro 4, due to its lack of a fingerprint reader, whose usefulness must be weighed against the aesthetic improvements made by the Alcantara fabric.

Signature

If the word “Signature” rings familiar, it’s because Microsoft is beginning to put more brand focus into a more comprehensive Signature concept, in the form of Signature Edition Computers, a line of third-party devices that promise faster loading times, easier setup, and no bloatware whatsoever. Some of these manufacturers include Asus, MSI and Acer, but it’s unlikely that any of these PCs will come wrapped in premium Italian fabrics.
