HealthKit gets its official welcome by App Store developers

It’s been a shaky start for HealthKit, on iOS 8, following bug reports, recently addressed by the latest iOS update 8.0.2. HealthKit integration, initially expected to be implemented in iOS8, has been pushed back, after a number of issues were brought to light, following the adoption of HealthKit by several fitness tracking, and similar apps.

Finally, HealthKit is back. Among the most popular apps recently updated, there is WebMD, whose Healthy Target feature is able to communicate with Apple’s HealthKit and provide what WebMD describes as “Actionable insight” into users health data.

CarrotFit is another app recently back into the AppStore, after the iOS 8.0.1 update hiccup. CarrotFit’s puts an irreverent, but effective spin on traditional fitness tracking, by providing entertaining feedback, triggered by different information and actions, for example when inputting food intake information, or when using a HealthKit compatible WiFi scale.

Grocery shopping, and recipe library app, Yummly, also features HealthKit integration, by using HealthKit data to track and provide information for healthier grocery choices.

Former NFL star Tony Gonzales’ FitStar Personal Trainer app has also made a comeback to the App Store, with a HealthKit update, as well as Gonzales’ library of workout videos.

A curated section of the Apple App Store called “Apps for Health”, features a growing number of HealthKit compatible apps, currently 14, including the above mentioned WebMD, Yummly, CarrotFit and FitStar.

Among some of the most interesting ones, the meditation app Omvana uses HealthKit data ranging from the date of birth to blood pressure and heart rate, to suggest appropriate meditation techniques.

On the less holistic side of the spectrum, Filament Labs’ Patient IO, features deep integration with the widest range of health data, in what has been described as a lifeline between patients and healthcare providers.

Bitesize 7 Minute Workout’s HealthKit integration has also been recently restored, along with the app’s ability to log burnt calories.
