Getac’s new rugged Windows 10 RX10 tablet showcased at Mobile World Congress

Tech manufacturers including Huawei, Trinity, VAIO, Panasonic and ALCATEL, showcased their latest devices, at the Mobile World Congress, in Barcelona, Spain, last week.

Attendees had the opportunity to see up close some of the latest Windows 10 devices, including the VAIO Phone Biz, which works like a PC when docked, and connected to a wireless keyboard and a pointing device.

Getac RX10 Windows 10 tablet

Tough-as-nails device manufacturer Getac, popular for supplying law enforcement and the military with some of the sturdiest, most durable computing devices in the world, has introduced the brand new Getac RX10, which, as the name suggests, is especially designed for the healthcare industry.

This rugged 10.1 inches Windows 10 tablet is both IP65 and MIL-STD 810G certified. The former rating translates in the device being totally protected from dust ingress and from low pressure water jets from all directions. The latter certification refers to the RX10 as having passed a series of military-grade stress tests, including temperature shock, fluid contamination, solar radiation, ballistic shock, rail impact, gunfire shock, and high/low temperatures.

While the above doesn’t strictly apply to all civilian manufacturers mentioning the MIL-STD 810G standard, as many who boast compliance with it, do not always perform actual tests on their devices, but rather build them according to the standards requirements. The same cannot be said about Getac, however, as its primary audience covers many government agencies, including armed forces, and duty officers.

The RX10 is considerably thinner and lighter than the average rugged device, with specs that are significantly higher than other existing heavy-duty tablet. The RX10 is powered by an Intel Core M CPU, and its graphic workload is handled by an Intel HD Graphics 5300.

The screen is designed to be responsive and tough, even when using gloves, or in the rain. It’s also designed for best visibility and clarity in sunlight, as the touchscreen display is built using LumiBond 2.0 technology.

Getac has gone all-out with connectivity options, by packing the RX10 with every possible way to communicate to other devices or the Internet, by integrating 802.11ac WiFi, Advanced 4G LTE, and dedicated GPS, as well as NFC/RFID reader, for all kinds of near-field communication applications, and even a barcode scanner.

The RX10 is also built to automatically connect to high-gain GPS, WWAN and WLAN roof-mounted antennas, when deployed in vehicles like ambulances, police cruisers, and even forklifts.

One thing that Getac does well, is to build devices with hot-swappable batteries. This allows to replace a nearly depleted battery with a fresh one, without having to turn off the device. This is possible through the integration of a built-in battery cell that keeps the tablet powered long enough to replace the main battery.

Available accessories include a detachable keyboard, which is liquid-resistant, and full-sized.
