Die-hard Microsoft Windows XP fans have a couple of months left before losing Google Drive support

Google ending support of Google Drive on Windows XP

Google has already ended Chrome support for Windows XP, Windows Vista and Apple Mac OS X 10.8 in April of this year, recommending users who want to continue receiving security updates and patches, to upgrade to a newer operating system, like Windows 8 or Windows 10.

Last week, Google has made a subtle, but important announcement in regard to its Google Drive service as well, whose support will no longer include Windows XP, Windows Vista, or Windows Server 2003, as of January 1st 2017.

All mentioned operating systems are no longer supported by Microsoft, with the exception of Windows Vista, whose extended support terminates officially in April 11th 2017.

Access to Google Drive through any number of alternative browsers, remains available, pending third-party support of an operating system which many vendors have already abandoned, even if it still represents a rather large percentage of worldwide users. With that said, Windows 10 popularity is on the rise, currently topping at 400 million active PCs, which is likely to increase sharply upon release of the Windows 10 Creators update, which promises to bring a number of radical improvements and additions to the platforms, especially for creative users who make use of Google Drive as their primary cloud backup destination.

Google Drive pricing is one big motivation to consider a more solid and up-to-date operating system, as budget users can still get 100GB for less than two dollars per month, although for storage of up to 1TB, the $9.99 per month charged by Google, is in line with Microsoft OneDrive, with the only exception that Google offers up to 10TB at $99.99 per month, while Microsoft’s maximum availability for home accounts is limited to 1TB, and shared among 5 users, for $99.99/year.
