Asus Chromebook C300 is a chromatic treat in a sea of white and silver

Those who are familiar with the 1993 comedy flick “Pleasantville”, featuring Tobey MaGuire and Reese Witherspoon, will relate to the visual feeling projected by the Asus C300 colorful line of Chromebooks , next to any number of other laptops, including other Chromebooks.

It’s hard to imagine any laptop in a selection of bright colors other than a gaming laptop, or featuring any kind of design that veers off from the monochromatic shades typical of most silver, white or black shiny slates. Most laptops and 2-in-1s do feature a limited array of colors mostly to attract business customers, looking for a device that won’t grab their clientele’s attention from the topic at hand.

This is also why Apple MacBooks, whose most eye-popping color treatment is Rose Gold, are a favorite in the workplace. Alas, Apple has been onto something for some time: consumers love colors, and love a device that stands out from the basic mold.

Asus has done an excellent work with the C300, which comes in a choice of Hot Red, Fresh Blue and Cool Black. The colors are bright, vibrant, but also iconic, and clean, giving the device a delightful folio appearance, and a certain sporty sleekness.

When opening a C300 in either Hot Red or Fresh Blue, it’s hard not to think of the good old Apple iBook G3, a colorful but powerful laptop modeled around the iMac G3. the keyboard and display bezel of the Asus C300 are stark white, with black keys. The Cool Black version, however, features an all-black finish.

Specs

The Asus C300 is deceptively powerful for a Chromebook, with a base configuration powered by a 1.2GHz Dual Core Intel Celeron processor, with 4GB of LPDDR3 RAM, and 16GB of SSD storage. Versions available, include a Quad Core Celeron, and a Quad Core Pentium.

Asus has made sure to cover all its basis on wireless connectivity, as it should when manufacturing a Chromebook, by integrating AC Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth V4.2.

This particular Chromebook also features a decent selection of ports, including two USB 3.0, and an HDMI port, and as always, an SDXC card reader.

The C300 weighs less than 3 pounds, and is less than an inch bigger than the 12 inch MacBook Retina, with similar battery life, up to 10 hours.
