4K gaming lands on Windows 10: Free Forza Motorsports 6 Apex Beta is now in the Windows Store

Forza Motorsport 6 Apex

Forza Motorsports 6 Apex is now available on the Microsoft Windows Store for free, to users of Windows 10, and on Xbox. Our initial impression of the game scored rather high, in reference to graphic quality, realism, and sound.

Forza Motorsports 6 Apex is also the first forza Motorsports edition that supports 4K resolution.

The full download of the game from the Windows Store is 18GB, but the actual game required up to 30GB of hard drive space to run properly.

According to Microsoft, the minimum specs required to play Forza Motorsports 6 are not for the faint of heart, and yet, they are within the range of newer Windows 10 laptops and devices, on a the higher-end side.

Playing Forza Motorsports on anything other than Windows 10 is rather difficult, and for a good reason, as the game is designed to take full advantage of DirectX 12, which is only available on Windows 10.

The lowest CPU required to play this game is a 3.7 GHz Intel Core i3, with 8GB of RAM. The minimum graphic hardware recommendation mention a Radeon R7 250X, or a GeForce 740, both with at least 2GB of video RAM.

Microsoft has also provided ideal hardware specs designed to ensure best performance when playing in 4K resolution. Any system built to play in 4K resolution should at least be powered by a 4GHz i7 Intel Core, and with 16GB or RAM. Recommended GPUs include the GeForce 920ti, or a Radeon Fury X, both with at least 6GB or video RAM.

No Forza 4K on Xbox

Sadly, no 4K support is available to Xbox users yet. The current version of the console is limited to 1080p (HD) resolution. With that said, rumors of a next generation Xbox console are circulating, with a possible upgrade to 4K, provided a proper external display setup.

Our system

The graphic hardware available for this specific demo sits somewhere in between the minimum, and recommended specs as cited by Microsoft. Our system is powered by an AMD FX 9590, 32GB of DDR3 RAM, 1TB HDD(games and apps), 500GB SSD (system), and the graphic capabilities are provided by a GeForce GTX 770 with 2GB of video RAM.

Experience

While we did run into a warning message in regard to low video memory, we were able to race a full round, at a resolution of 1080p at 60fps, with full specs enabled. The experience was truly amazing, and completely lag-free, with no flickering, or hangs whatsoever.

If the image quality of the game at 1080p is of any indication, we can only imagine what it would be like to play Forza Motorsports 6 Apex Beta at full 4K resolution.
